A way into the drawing

  1. Place the head mass

Sketch the cranium as an oval and attach a smaller jaw shape. Indicate the neck and shoulder.

  2. Find the profile landmarks

Mark the brow, base of the nose, lips, and chin. Compare their distances before committing.

  3. Build the hair and values

Treat the hair as a few large masses. Shade the eye socket, underside of the nose, and neck.

A small thing to tryTake breaks to compare the silhouette. A small change to the nose or chin matters more than extra hair detail.
