A bat with its wings open

Use a small central body and two sweeping wings to draw a bat. A few support lines and scalloped edges explain the wings without filling them with texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Set the body and wing span

Draw a small body and head, then sweep a guide out to each wingtip. Keep the body centered between the wings.

  2. Build the scalloped membranes

Add an elbow bend and a few support lines on each wing. Join their ends with broad scallops rather than many tiny curves.

  3. Finish the face and overlaps

Add small ears, eyes, nose, and feet. Use restrained gray at the wing roots to show how they connect to the body.

A small thing to tryDraw both outer wing shapes before the inner supports so the spread feels balanced.
