A chick taking a small step

Build a chick from two soft rounded shapes, then practice a folded wing and a pair of stepping feet. Choose a few feather tufts rather than drawing every feather.

A way into the drawing

  1. Join two rounded shapes

Sketch a round body and a smaller head touching its front. Add a short beak and a slight lift at the tail.

  2. Fold the wing and place the feet

Draw one soft wing shape over the body, then add a couple of feather edges. Place two legs beneath the body with one foot slightly ahead.

  3. Select the feather details

Add the eye and a few tufts at the crown and chest. Keep any pencil accents close to contours and overlaps, leaving the broad body and wing open.

A small thing to tryPlace the supporting foot beneath the body before drawing the stepping foot, so the chick feels balanced.
