A narwhal with a long tapered tusk

Draw a gently curved narwhal with a tapered tusk, small flippers, and a divided tail. Sparse body marks and local gray keep the forms readable.

A way into the drawing

  1. Taper the whale body

Draw a long rounded form that narrows toward the tail. Keep the head broad and the back gently curved.

  2. Attach the flippers and tusk

Add a near flipper, a smaller far flipper, and the two tail flukes. Extend a long tapered tusk from the front of the head.

  3. Limit the surface marks

Place the eye, mouth, a few broad spots, and a few diagonal tusk marks. Use only a small shadow beneath the near flipper.

A small thing to tryLeave space in front of the head before drawing the body so the tusk stays fully inside the page.
