A puffin with a broad striped beak

Draw a puffin in profile using a rounded body, broad beak, and two small feet. Large head and wing patches give it character without individual feather texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Join the head and body

Place a round head above the front of a compact oval body. Add the short tail and a large triangular beak.

  2. Set the wing and feet

Curve the folded wing against the body and place two short legs below it. Use simple connected shapes for the webbed feet.

  3. Separate the broad patches

Divide the beak with a couple of broad bands and add the head and wing patches. Use limited gray in the beak, feet, and wing overlap; keep the pale face and belly open.

A small thing to tryCheck the beak’s size against the head early; its broad wedge is the puffin’s main feature.
