A seal resting on its belly

Use a long rounded body and broad flippers to sketch a resting seal. A small muzzle and selected gray patches suggest its form without covering it in texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Find the long body shape

Sketch a broad oval that narrows toward the rear. Raise a small rounded head at the front and connect it with a short neck.

  2. Set the flippers

Add the broad near flipper against the belly and show a little of the far flipper. Divide the rear into two short flippers.

  3. Keep the face small

Add the eyes, nostrils, muzzle, and a few whiskers. Use a light gray accent beneath the chin and belly to separate the large shapes.

A small thing to tryCheck the head against the body before adding the face. Keeping it modest helps the seal feel natural.
