A frog sitting quietly

Build a seated frog from a rounded head and body, then show how the folded legs overlap. A few spots and small gray shadows give the sketch form.

A way into the drawing

  1. Place the large forms

Sketch a broad head above a squat body. Mark the raised eyes and leave room beside the body for the folded hind legs.

  2. Connect the legs

Bring the front legs down to the ground and draw the hind legs folding behind them. Use a few rounded strokes to separate the toes.

  3. Add selective detail

Place the eyes, nostrils, and mouth, then add a few irregular spots. Use light gray beneath the chin, between overlapping legs, and below the feet.

A small thing to tryCheck the gaps between the legs before adding spots. Those open spaces make the seated pose readable.
