A koala sitting with folded legs

Practice a round head, broad ears, and simple folded legs with a seated koala. Its oval nose and a few overlap shadows provide detail without a coat of tiny fur marks.

A way into the drawing

  1. Place the head and ears

Sketch a round head above a soft oval body. Attach broad ears on either side, letting the far ear sit partly behind the head.

  2. Fold the legs beside the body

Draw two rounded hind legs, then bring the arms down between them. Use simple paw curves to show where the limbs end.

  3. Anchor the face with the nose

Place the oval nose first, then the small eyes and mouth. Add limited gray inside the ears and at limb overlaps.

A small thing to tryKeep the eyes small and the nose clearly taller than it is wide to preserve the koala’s face.
