A stingray with gently lifted fins

Explore flowing contours with a stingray seen from above. Gentle fin folds, small eyes, and a long tail add useful detail without covering the broad body.

A way into the drawing

  1. Draw the broad silhouette

Start with a soft diamond, rounding the nose and sweeping the sides out into broad fins. Keep the center wide.

  2. Lift the fin edges

Turn each fin tip with a short curved fold. Draw the tail from the back center and taper it along one loose curve.

  3. Place the eyes and accents

Add two small raised eyes and tiny marks behind them. A little gray inside the turned edges is enough to show the fins lifting.

A small thing to tryUse a light centerline to place both eyes. The fins can be naturally uneven without shifting the face.
