A toucan with a curved oversized bill

Practice a toucan with clear forms and selected overlaps. Add the wing against the body and a short stepped tail. Use only a few broad feather divisions. Place a short branch and two feet that curl over it. Add the eye, bill division and small local gray accents.

A way into the drawing

  1. Balance the body and bill

Draw a compact bird body and a large curved bill. Let the bill taper gently rather than ending in a sharp triangle.

  2. Fold the wing and tail

Add the wing against the body and a short stepped tail. Use only a few broad feather divisions.

  3. Wrap the feet around the perch

Place a short branch and two feet that curl over it. Add the eye, bill division and small local gray accents.

A small thing to tryLeave extra paper in front of the bill so the bird does not feel cramped.
