The old film camera

A little study in circles, boxes, and perspective. Take your time with the lens before adding the camera’s texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Build the camera box

Sketch the body as a shallow box. Keep the top and bottom edges traveling toward the same point.

  2. Place the lens

Add two nested ellipses for the lens and connect them into a short cylinder.

  3. Add the character

Draw the viewfinder, shutter button, and a few texture marks. Deepen shadows beneath the lens.

A small thing to tryCheck the lens ellipses before shading. A small adjustment to their tilt can make the whole camera feel solid.
