A bean seedling with its first two leaves

Draw a bean seedling from a curved stem, two first leaves, and a split seed. A short root and selected veins keep the plant readable without a fine root network.

A way into the drawing

  1. Follow the stem and root

Draw one gentle stem curve and continue it into a short root below. Leave room at the top for the two first leaves.

  2. Open the leaves and seed halves

Place the leaves at the upper junction and the two plump seed halves lower down. Show their overlaps with clear interrupted contours.

  3. Keep the branches simple

Add a main vein in each leaf and just a few root branches. Use small gray at the leaf and seed overlaps.

A small thing to tryKeep the root thinner than the stem so the young plant’s structure reads clearly.
