A birdhouse with a simple pitched roof

Build a plain birdhouse from a box and pitched roof. A round opening, short perch, and broad roof overhang add structure without detailed wood grain.

A way into the drawing

  1. Build the box and roof

Draw a simple box in three-quarter view and place a pitched roof over it. Let the roof extend slightly beyond the walls.

  2. Open the doorway and perch

Place a round entry hole on the front. Add a short perch below it with a small rounded end.

  3. Shade the roof overhang

Add restrained graphite beneath the roof and inside the entry hole. Use a little tone at the perch attachment and base, keeping the broad walls and roof open.

A small thing to tryAim the roof and box edges toward the same direction so their perspective agrees.
