A carrot with a loose leafy crown

Draw a carrot with an uneven taper and a small loose leafy crown. A few short root marks and simple leaf branches keep it approachable.

A way into the drawing

  1. Taper the root

Draw a broad shoulder narrowing into a slightly curved point. Let the two sides differ gently instead of making a perfect cone.

  2. Keep the leafy crown loose

Place a few short stems at the shoulder and add a small set of broad leaf shapes. Leave gaps between them.

  3. Choose the root marks

Add a few short curved lines across the carrot and a tiny side root. Use pale graphite at the crown and one edge only.

A small thing to tryMake the root marks curve around the carrot rather than cutting straight across it.
