One scoop in a cone

Sketch an uneven scoop over a tapered cone, then add a loose waffle grid. A small shadow beneath the scoop helps separate the two forms.

A way into the drawing

  1. Round the scoop

Draw a broad uneven dome with a ruffled lower edge. Keep the large silhouette clear before adding any small surface curves.

  2. Taper the cone

Bring the cone sides down to a point beneath the scoop. Add widely spaced diagonal lines in each direction for the waffle grid.

  3. Separate the forms

Add a few loose curves to suggest scooping. Place light gray beneath the scoop and along one cone edge, leaving the center white.

A small thing to tryLet some waffle lines stop short of the outline. A loose grid looks natural and avoids filling every space with detail.
