Practice a lotus flower with clear forms and selected overlaps. Add a second small layer with clear overlaps and a few short center marks. Keep the petal interiors open. Draw a broad notched leaf below the short stem. Choose only a few radiating veins and small petal shadows.

A way into the drawing

  1. Set the blossom’s width

    Draw a shallow bowl guide for the flower and arrange the first broad petal layer around it.

  2. Open the upper petals

    Add a second small layer with clear overlaps and a few short center marks. Keep the petal interiors open.

  3. Curve the leaf below

    Draw a broad notched leaf below the short stem. Choose only a few radiating veins and small petal shadows.
