Two cherries and a leaf

Practice two overlapping round forms, curved stems, and a pointed leaf. Small dimples and short lower curves make the cherries feel less flat.

A way into the drawing

  1. Place the cherries

Draw two slightly uneven round shapes, with one lower and partly in front of the other. Add a shallow dimple at the top of each.

  2. Join the stems

Pull two slender curved stems up from the dimples and bring them together. Attach one pointed leaf at the join.

  3. Use a light finish

Add a center vein and a few side veins to the leaf, then a short lower curve on each cherry. Keep the fruit white and add a faint shadow beneath it.

A small thing to tryStop the rear cherry outline where the front cherry overlaps it. A clean overlap gives depth without filling the fruit with tone.
