A poppy with four loose petals

Build a poppy from a small center and four broad, uneven petals. A curved stem and one simple leaf give you useful contour and overlap practice.

A way into the drawing

  1. Place the center and petals

Mark a small flower center and sweep four broad petals around it. Let their edges overlap with different heights.

  2. Curve the stem and leaf

Bring a slim stem down from the bloom and add one simple lobed leaf. Keep its main vein aligned with the stem junction.

  3. Choose the center details

Add a few short stamens and simple center marks. Keep graphite close to the petal roots, center, and selected leaf areas, with only a couple of petal creases.

A small thing to tryVary the petal edges gently; identical arcs can make the flower feel stiff.
