A pumpkin with a curled stem

Use overlapping lobe curves to show a pumpkin’s round form. A bent stem, small leaf, and curled tendril add detail with very little shading.

A way into the drawing

  1. Keep it squat

Draw a wide rounded outline with a slightly flattened base. Place the stem above the dip at the top.

  2. Curve the lobes

Make the center lobe broad and let the side lobes overlap behind it. Follow the rounded form with a few long contour curves.

  3. Finish the top

Add the bent stem, leaf veins, and one curled tendril. Deepen the stem join slightly and add a faint shadow directly below the base.

A small thing to tryKeep the lobe interiors as white paper. Their overlapping curves can show roundness without blended shading.
