A rolled towel with a loose corner

Practice a soft cylinder with one rolled towel. An elliptical spiral and loose hanging corner show the fabric’s layers without a dense woven texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Round the soft cylinder

Draw a near ellipse and extend soft sides toward the rounded far end. Let the edges sag gently rather than using perfect straight lines.

  2. Roll the visible end

Draw a loose spiral within the near ellipse. Keep the spacing broad enough to read as folded fabric.

  3. Drape the loose corner

Bring one corner down from the roll and add a couple of broad folds. Keep graphite inside the spiral and beneath the corner.

A small thing to tryFollow the near ellipse when drawing the spiral so the roll keeps the same perspective.
