A scallop shell with broad ribs

Build a scallop shell from a fan shape and a small hinge. A handful of broad radiating ribs gives the shell structure without dense grooves.

A way into the drawing

  1. Open the fan shape

Place the hinge low on the page, then sweep a broad fan outline above it. Add two short hinge ears at the base.

  2. Radiate the broad ribs

Draw a small set of rib lines spreading from the hinge toward the rim. Space them across the whole fan.

  3. Shape the rim and accents

Give the outer edge soft scallops and add one curved growth line. Keep pencil tone small and close to the hinge or rim fold.

A small thing to tryStart the ribs from the same small hinge area so they feel like parts of one shell.
