A pretzel with a simple crossing knot

Follow one thick loop of dough through a pretzel knot. Clear overlaps and a few broad salt marks give you a useful exercise in tracing connected forms.

A way into the drawing

  1. Plan the three openings

Lightly mark the two upper openings and the lower opening. Sweep the dough’s outer curve around them.

  2. Trace the crossing ends

Follow each dough end through the center and attach it at the lower side. Hide the lines where one piece passes behind another.

  3. Add a few salt marks

Place a small set of broad salt flecks. Use limited gray beneath the crossings to clarify the knot.

A small thing to tryTrace the dough as one continuous path before darkening it; this helps keep the knot connected.
