A thread spool with a loose loop

Practice a thread spool with clear forms and selected overlaps. Curve a small set of widely spaced lines around the cylinder. Leave the broad spaces open. Add a trailing loop and the small top hole. Keep graphite beneath the rim overlaps.

A way into the drawing

  1. Stack the rim ellipses

Draw matching top and lower ellipses with a short cylinder between them. Keep their angles consistent.

  2. Wrap a few thread lines

Curve a small set of widely spaced lines around the cylinder. Leave the broad spaces open.

  3. Unwind a loose loop

Add a trailing loop and the small top hole. Keep graphite beneath the rim overlaps.

A small thing to tryFlatten the lower ellipse to the same degree as the upper one so the spool sits naturally.
