A slice of toast with a pat of butter

Practice a soft silhouette and a small overlap with a slice of toast and butter. A few crumb marks and a light crust accent add character without dense texture.

A way into the drawing

  1. Draw the soft bread shape

Make a rounded double arch at the top, then connect it to gently squared lower corners. Keep the outline slightly irregular.

  2. Show thickness and overlap

Add a narrow side crust along the lower edge. Place the small butter pat on the face and give it a slight thickness.

  3. Select the crumb marks

Scatter a few small crumb marks rather than filling the surface. Use a little gray inside the lower crust and beneath the butter.

A small thing to tryKeep the butter edges at the same angle as the toast’s top surface, so it looks like it rests on the bread.
