An umbrella with a curved handle

Use curved panel seams and a doubled lower edge to give an open umbrella depth. Small shaded areas beneath the canopy keep the exercise focused.

A way into the drawing

  1. Place canopy and shaft

Sketch a broad dome at a slight angle and run the shaft down from its center. Leave room for the curved handle below.

  2. Curve the panels

Bring the panel seams from the top toward the scalloped lower edge. Add a second line along the hem and small rounded tips at the joins.

  3. Keep the tone local

Shade the visible underside near the outer scallops and the inside of the handle. Keep the large canopy panels mostly white.

A small thing to tryDraw each seam as a long relaxed curve. Its direction does more to show the canopy shape than extra shading.
