A familiar houseplant with bold, split leaves. Practice balancing organic shapes against a simple ceramic pot.

A way into the drawing

1. Set down the pot

   Draw a shallow oval rim and taper the sides toward a narrower base.

2. Arrange the leaves

   Sketch five heart-shaped leaves at different heights, connecting each one to a curved stem.

3. Open the leaf shapes

   Add a central vein and a few long splits. Finish with simple stripes on the pot.

A small thing to tryGive each leaf its own direction. Avoid arranging all the stems like spokes on a wheel.
